MURATIE WINE ESTATE |

Underfoot
the land breathes. From the centuries-old oaks to the resting
cellar and original homestead, a romance lingers of love,
passion, grapes, art, life – of the story of a wine
farm in Africa.
Comfortable with visitors,
but not crowds, the farm echoes old-world hospitality. The
environment is authentic, the methods traditional and the surrounds,
beautiful and unmanicured. The farm itself exudes honesty,
humbleness and integrity – qualities
that resonate in every drop of Muratie wine. www.muratie.co.za |

BACKSBERG |

|
|
Backsberg has become the first wine
producer in South Africa and third in the world to gain Carbon
Neutral status by sequestrating its carbon emissions. |
Proprietor, Michael
Back, who joined the family business in 1976, is passionate
about the environment, believing that each generation is
the custodian of the land for a limited period of time only.
“Care for the environment means care and concern for succeeding generations.
As custodians of the land, it is our duty to understand and recognise potential
threats, and to mitigate against them for the benefit of the next generation,” says
Back whose forward thinking has already rescued several plant species from extinction
by reserving 10% of his land for non-development and preservation of the endangered “Fynbos” biome.

REYNEKE |

The Reyneke
label was created in 1998 when Johan Reyneke Jr. took over
the farming activities from his mother and produced the first
wines on the family farm, Uitzicht. The 20ha farm faces the
historic town of Stellenbosch and overlooks the surrounding
mountain ranges and the beautiful False Bay.
Since inception,
Johan has moved from farming conventionally to farming organically
and finally to farming and producing his wines in accordance
with biodynamic principles. He is currently one of only a few
winemakers in SA who produce biodynamic wines and is considered
somewhat of a ground- breaker in this regard. www.reynekewines.co.za

DARLING
CELLARS |

The demarcation of the WO Darling district
has led to a focus at Darling Cellars
on wines which are terroir and varietal
specific. The cool and temperate West
Coast climate lends itself to a different
micro- and mesoclimate which, along with
the different types of soil, lead to
unique grapes, which we guide into even
more unique wines. Having 95% of all
vineyards dry land and almost the same
percentage as bush vine, this is as close
to what nature intended for grapes to
be as one can get.
From the premium Onyx range, single vineyard and small batches, the absolutely
fantastic value for money DC Range to the blended Flamingo Bay range, there
is a wine to suit every palate and every taste.

WARWICK
WINES |

Warwick wine estate was known as the
farm ‘Good Success’ from
1791 until 1902. After the Anglo Boer
war, Colonel Alexander Gordon from Warwickshire
regiment bought the farm and renamed
it ‘Warwick’ as a tribute
to his regiment.
In 1964 the farm was purchased by Stan & Norma Ratcliffe, at the time
there was not a single vine on the farm. However, Stan and Norma Ratcliffe
soon realized the potential of the terroir and began planting Cabernet
Sauvignon. The Cabernet Sauvignon vines gave high quality grapes, which
were soon in demand from wholesalers and other wineries.
