Our dogs

"Dogs are our link to paradise. They don’t know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring- it was peace."
– Milan Kundera

The dog’s birthdays are celebrated with complimentary tea and yummy cupcakes on the front porch.

Ben
Ben

Being the worlds naughtiest dog is not an easy task with Hollywood claiming to have a certain “Marley” competing for the honours in one of their latest blockbusters. What was thought to be a naughty streak that would disappear with age just matured into Ben being a sweet looking, sun-block and shoe stealing scratch my back, or face the consequences most charming looking ruler of all and sundry at Camps Bay Retreat. Be warned, he will charm you out of your Pradas.

Born 27 January - he turned 5 this year.

Blondie
Blondie

Although not his mother by blood or choice, Blondie was the one that had to show Ben the ropes of how to be a good Golden Retriever when he appeared on the scene. She’s a well tempered old lady, although she did once kill a poodle by barking at it, sending it into cardiac arrest. With a bit of a weight problem and a soft spot for a man in uniform you will find her patrolling the property with our security personnel or sleeping in the security hut acting as if she is the Grand old Dame of the Retreat. Not being his real mother, she dissociates herself from any of Ben’s behavioral misfortunes, except when they go to the West Coast on weekends. There they are a team to be feared by dogs and all visiting or living in Paradise Beach.

Born 31 January - she turned 7 this year.

Jess
Jess

Not having any sheep to look after you’ll always find Jessie, the black Border Collie chasing Squirrels into trees. If it’s in you nature to herd, even squirrels will do. Jessie emigrated from the West Coast with Frans our Estate Manager and Horticulturist and quickly became a bit of a snob, suddenly living in the splendour of an estate as grand as the Camps Bay Retreat. But it only takes one squirrel and Jesse is herself again.

Born 9 December - she is turning 6 this year

Wanda
Wanda

Wanda is a highly active Welsh Springer Spaniel with a gentle disposition and the baby of the pack. Stray balls form the tennis court is Wanda’s favourite toy and she will insist some time spent playing fetch. With legs, ears and tail leaping for each tactically thrown ball she deserves to be forgiven for her muffin snatching at breakfast time. Wanda enjoys taking dips in the solar heated pool and will happily lounge around on the lawn with you if you will consider her your friend.

Born 16 November – she is turning 2 this year.

Bella
Bella

The familiar “click” of resident furry friends, saw the arrival of dainty ball of white fur. Confused at first, did they realise to their surprise – it is not a chew toy, but a puppy.  Bella, true Pomeranian by nature and challenging the hierarchy, is showing bursts of energy followed by short sessions of playtime, finished off by a peaceful nap in a secluded little corner of the Manor House.

...small by nature, but big at heart...

Born 19 March 2011
